Council welcomes funding for Pedrina Park Inclusive Sporting Hub

10 July 2020

Southern Grampians Shire Council is thrilled with today’s announcement of $500,000 to help fund the Pedrina Park Inclusive Sporting Hub. The announcement was made this morning by Labor Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford MP.

The Victorian Government contribution, through the 2020-21 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, will be matched by a contribution of $700,000 from Council.

The $1.2 million Pedrina Park Inclusive Sporting Hub project will see the construction of a modular sports pavilion, catering for Netball, Hockey, Soccer, Cricket and AFL. The pavilion development is a key recommendation within the Pedrina Park Masterplan, designed to improve accessibility and amenity for all sports, abilities and genders.

Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Chris Sharples welcomed the funding, saying the project will provide huge benefits for the sport in the Southern Grampians Shire and the wider region.

“This funding announcement is one of the most important developments in our Shire in recent times and we thank Minister Pulford and the Victorian Government for their contribution to this very significant project for our region.

“It represents the first steps in fulfilling the vision for Pedrina Park to be a regionally significant sporting facility. We’ll deliver fully accessible change facilities, improving the amenities particularly for our female sporting clubs, and provide increased storage, better social spaces and outdoor viewing areas for spectators.

“The facility will offer significant benefits for the community, our sporting clubs and the region,” Cr Sharples said.

“We identified the need for these improvements through our Sports and Recreation Strategy and the Pedrina Park Masterplan. We’ve worked for a number of years with the community and the user groups to come up with a solution that meets the needs of all sports using the facility. We appreciate their patience and their time as we’ve worked through a number of challenges.

“Today’s announcement is a wonderful acknowledgement of everyone’s hard work and it’s fantastic to see this project coming to fruition,” Cr Sharples concluded.

Council officers will now begin the process of preparing tenders for the project and construction commencement is expected early in the new year.
