Residents of Branxholme, Tarrington and outer Hamilton will notice some changes in the coming weeks as a new waste and recycling collection service is rolled out.
From the first week of July, all households in these townships will receive a weekly waste collection and fortnightly recycling collection, bringing them into line them with the service offered to every other township in the Shire.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Mary-Ann Brown said Council is committed to reducing waste to landfill, controlling waste management costs and increasing resource recovery.
“Following an extensive review of waste services in 2016, Council is implementing a raft of changes to improve waste management. Standardising the waste and recycling collection service we offer to households across the Shire is an important step toward improving our processes,” Cr Brown said.
“The cost of sending waste to landfill continues to rise. For every tonne of waste that is sent to the Hamilton Landfill, Council is required to pay a levy to the State Government. We want to recover as many recyclable items as possible so that these materials can be re-used, instead of putting them into landfill. The more waste that can be diverted from landfill, the more our community will benefit, economically and environmentally.
“Providing households with a recycling bin to separate materials at the source is best practice waste management and we are pleased that all our townships are now provided with the service,” Cr Brown said.
For those residents who weren’t already participating in the optional service offered in these townships, new bins will be delivered to homes towards the end of June by Council’s collection contractor so that the new service can commence in the first week of July. Details of collection days will be attached to the bins and will be available at www.sthgrampians.vic.gov.au
In another move to improve and standardise services, residents in the urban area of Hamilton are advised of the following changes to their waste service, which will come into effect in September:
• Waste and recycling will be collected on the same day
• Recycling collection will be changed from weekly to fortnightly
• 120 litre recycling bins will be replaced with a 240 litre bin
