Southern Grampians Shire Council is investing in community safety with the installation of a new pedestrian crossing (wombat crossing) on Brown Street, between Council offices and Coles Supermarket in Hamilton.

The upgrade responds to significant growth in pedestrian traffic along this busy retail strip and will replace the current temporary crossing with a permanent solution designed to enhance safety and accessibility for all community members.

The new wombat crossing will provide better visibility, improved access for people with mobility challenges, and create a safer environment for everyone using Brown Street.

Brown Street will be closed in the section around the current pedestrian crossing so vehicles will be detoured around the site while these important works are completed.

Drivers will be able to exit the Coles car park onto Brown Street but the entry will have restricted access.

The Lonsdale Street entrance into Coles will be unaffected and is the recommended entry point to the supermarket.

Work will commence on 5 February 2025, with completion expected within two weeks, weather permitting. During construction:

  • Brown Street will have restricted access between Gray and Lonsdale Streets

  • Traffic management and detours will be in place

  • Pedestrian access will be maintained via clearly marked alternative routes

  • Trotters Coaches' Brown Street stop (ID 36328) will temporarily relocate to Lonsdale Street in front of the Senior Citizens Centre (ID 46923) for three weeks

  • Coles Brown Street entry will be closed to traffic – Lonsdale Street entrance remains open

Council acknowledges these works may cause temporary inconvenience and appreciates the community's patience during this important safety upgrade.
