Become a Lifeguard and Dive into the Ideal Summer Job

Summer is just around the corner, and there's no better way to enjoy the season than by making a splash as a lifeguard at one of our local pools! Southern Grampians Shire Council are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team and help us keep our community safe while they enjoy the water for the 2024/25 summer season.

Whether you're a seasoned lifeguard with years of experience or just getting started in the field, we want to hear from you! If you're over 18 and willing to get a few qualifications, this is your chance to gain flexible hours, work at different pools across the Shire, and make the most of a summer spent outdoors. If you’re under 18, there are still opportunities for shifts at the Hamilton and Coleraine pools.

Director Wellbeing, Planning and Regulation, Rory Neeson said ‘Summer Casuals’ will be required at the Hamilton, Balmoral, Coleraine, Dunkeld and Penshurst outdoor pools between December and March.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone with a current Pool Lifeguard qualification or anyone willing to get qualified to work in our region over the Summer,” said Mr Neeson.

“You get flexible hours and a diverse roster that can place you at different pools if you want to experience summer all over the Shire. Plus, if the pool is closed (outdoor pools are closed when the water temperature dips below 23 degrees) you can spend the shift focusing on important facility maintenance duties if you want to work the hours. The pay is good, and, in the past, we’ve had lifeguards work a good season and jet off to Europe with their earnings.”

Mr Neeson has also said that applications from outside the Shire from those thinking of moving to the area, people staying for summer, or people on holidays from Uni are welcome.

Rolling recruitment will continue throughout the season, with the first group interviews starting on Friday 13 September. These group sessions are a fantastic opportunity to find out if lifeguarding is the right fit for you. Plus, if you need to complete your lifeguard training, you can apply now and finalise your certification before the pools open. Costs of training will be reimbursed for all successful applicants who work consistently through the season. The next training course at HILAC will be held on the 19 and 20 October 2024.

Applicants are not required to have obtained their qualifications prior to the group interviews as the interview stage will give applicants an understanding of the requirements of the position.

Mr Neeson, who began his own career as a lifeguard with the Southern Grampians Shire Council, encourages everyone to consider joining the team. "Lifeguarding is more than just a job; it’s a way to connect with your community, build valuable skills, and enjoy the summer to the fullest."
