Southern Grampians Shire Council awarded the contract for the Pedrina Park Cricket Net Renewal of $162,230 at last night’s Council meeting.

Following a budget submission by the St Andrews Cricket Club, Council allocated funding in the 2024/25 budget for the much-needed upgrades to the cricket nets and a contract was awarded to SJ & CE Van Kalken.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin celebrated the upgrades, saying Pedrina Park has grown into one of the best sporting facilities in Southwest Victoria.

“Council have invested significantly in the development of the facilities since the adoption of the Pedrina Park Master Plan in 2019, transforming the grounds into a premium sporting facility for the region.

“Our community lives and breathes sport; it’s a cornerstone of who we are. With such a high number of people competing and connecting through sport, training hard and pushing themselves to their limits, it makes sense to try to nurture that passion by creating top level spaces for athletes to train, compete, and thrive.

“As part of this renewal, the existing two nets will be replaced by modern 14.4m x 34m cricket nets incorporating four fully enclosed lanes, with synthetic surface which will comply with Cricket Australia Infrastructure guidelines. on.

“The cricket nets are a key part of the Pedrina Park Master Plan to supporting local participation and compliments improvements made to playing surfaces including irrigation and oval rejuvenation so it will be great to see this project delivered to our community,” concluded Cr Heslin.

Council was very pleased to contribute $102,230 towards the new nets. Council staff secured an additional $40,000 grant from Cricket Australia to add to the project. St Andrews Cricket Club who are the cricket tenants at Pedrina Park, were able to contribute a further $20,000.

Community members are encouraged to get involved in shaping future initiatives by submitting ideas for the 2025/26 Council budget. Whether it’s a project, an initiative, or even a vision for the future, Council is eager to hear from residents.
