Early steps in transforming Hamilton’s CBD are underway, with a series of soil investigations scheduled to take place from Friday 21 March through to Wednesday 27 March.

These works are an important part of Council’s CBD Revitalisation Project, helping ensure that the design of future road upgrades is stable, cost-effective, and most importantly, built to last.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Acting Mayor, Afton Barber welcomed the beginning of this crucial work.

“Council’s Landscape Architect has engaged a specialist contractor to carry out the testing, which involves drilling 23 small boreholes at key points across the CBD, including parking bays, lanes, and streets. The team have already been visible around town performing preliminary investigations which we are grateful for.

“This work will allow us to hit the ground running once the project progresses.”

Each borehole takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete and will be carefully backfilled and restored as the work progresses.

“The testing will help engineers understand the soil conditions underneath our roads—information that’s essential for laying the groundwork (quite literally) for a functional, secure and long-lasting CBD”, concluded Cr Barber.

Traffic Management in Place

To ensure safety and minimise disruptions:

  • Stop-and-go traffic controls will be used where boreholes are located in traffic lanes.
  • Roads will remain open to two-way traffic when work is occurring in parking bays.

A Traffic Guidance Scheme (TGS) has been developed to ensure all works are carried out safely and efficiently.

Schedule of Works:

  • Friday 21 March – Service location preparation
  • Monday 24 March – Gray Street (approx. 10 boreholes)
  • Tuesday 25 March – Thompson Street (approx. 10 boreholes)
  • Wednesday 26 March – Brown Street (remaining boreholes)
  • Thursday 27 March – Corriedale Lane (final checks and wrap-up, if required)

Council appreciates the community’s patience during these works as we take these important steps toward a better Hamilton.
