Visitor Spending Soars in the Southern Grampians this Summer
Published on 21 January 2025
The Southern Grampians Shire has plenty to celebrate, with the latest Spendmapp data revealing a $2 million boost in spending during the bustling November-December 2024 period.
Visitor spending played a starring role, surging an impressive 10% year-on-year and giving our local economy a boost in time for the holidays.
Cafes, restaurants, and entertainment venues experienced exceptional trade, solidifying the Shire as a must-visit summer destination. Visitor spending hit new highs, showcasing the impact of Christmas events, competitions, and initiatives that brought locals and tourists together in celebration.
While some retail sectors unfortunately faced challenges (specialised and luxury goods, specialised food and furniture) the overall $57.7 million spend, up from $55.7 million in 2023, reflects the resilience of local businesses and the effectiveness of tourism efforts.
Mayor Cr Dennis Heslin celebrated the successful November-December period for the region.
“Our Shire is buzzing with activity, and these figures prove that visitors not only love our towns but also our community. This growth in spending underscores the vital role tourism plays in driving our economy and enriching the festive spirit of the region.”
“Our local businesses, particularly in Dunkeld and Glenthompson, are feeling the impacts of the fires and the wobble that tourism took over the Christmas period. Let’s get behind our community and try to make a special effort to stop in these towns, have a look around the shops and eat a delicious meal. You’ll be glad you did,” concluded Mr Heslin.
Council is investing heavily in the region with improvements to sporting facilities, public amenities and Council owned roads. With major projects planned such as the Hamilton CBD revitalisation, the New Hamilton Gallery and the game changing Community Hub all in development; this is a Shire that’s on the rise.
Council encourages everyone to keep supporting our incredible local businesses—they’re the heart of our economy and community wellbeing. Together, we can continue this success into 2025!
