Southern Grampians Shire Council is proud to declare its participation in International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

IDAHOBIT is observed annually on 17 May to celebrate diversity within our community and to raise awareness about the discrimination lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and other marginalized communities worldwide face. The day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

In recognition of this important day, Council will host an event in the Hamilton Gallery Foyer on Friday 17 May from 4:00pm.

The event will feature an afternoon tea with a speaker who will discuss the history and significance of the day and highlight the importance of allyship and solidarity. There will also be an opportunity at the gallery for people to contribute to a community art installation.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, ask questions, and connect with others in a supportive setting.

“IDAHOBIT Day provides us with an important opportunity to reinforce our commitment to the rights and dignity of all individuals,” said Cr Robertson.”

“We can make our stance clear and use the strength of our community to stand against discrimination.

“I welcome people from across our region to embrace this occasion to discuss issues of inequality, so together we may work towards a more inclusive and compassionate society.

“Whether or not you are affected by discrimination, it is statistically likely that someone close to you has faced adversity. It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure that we support one another and create a positive culture in which we can all thrive.”
