A much loved tourist asset will receive an upgrade following the awarding of the contract for the replacement of the Nigretta Stairs and the Viewing Platform for $615,651.43 at Wednesday night’s Council meeting.

The replacement of the Nigretta Falls Reserve Stairs and Viewing Platform are included within the Capital Works Program 2024/25 with a budget of $630,000.00. A funding request was submitted to the State Government Council Flood Support Fund (CFSF) seeking a contribution of $230,000.00 for the replacement of the Nigretta Falls stairs and viewing deck.  This funding application was successful, with the works to be completed by early 2025.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said a condition assessment was undertaken in 2023 which deemed the stairs to be unsafe after storm damage sustained in the 2022 floods.

“The upgrade of the stairs and the platform were prioritised in the 2024/25 budget,” said Cr Heslin

“The replacement will feature Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP), a modern, lightweight material that offers the strength of steel with the added benefits of being cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

“FRP will provide a long-lasting solution, with an estimated lifespan of 75 years and minimal maintenance required for the first 25 years,” said Cr Heslin.

Additionally, FRP production has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional materials like steel or concrete, making it a sustainable choice that reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

“To ensure the project aligns with environmental and cultural sensitivities, a Flora and Fauna Assessment and a Cultural Heritage Assessment have been completed. Further advice on cultural heritage management has been sought, ensuring that the project complies with all necessary standards,” concluded Cr Heslin.

Nigretta Falls is one of the Shire’s most iconic natural attractions, drawing more than 10,000 visitors each year to admire the stunning volcanic-based waterfall and panoramic valley views. The Falls, located in the picturesque Nigretta Falls Reserve, offer a unique experience with access to the base of the waterfall and a viewing platform that captures the best of the area's natural beauty.

Council is committed to delivering a compliant and sustainable replacement structure, ensuring Nigretta Falls remains a cherished destination for both residents and visitors for years to come.
