Registering a pet

pet-registration.png

In accordance with the Domestic Animals Act 1994, all dogs and cats over the age of three months of age are required to be registered and microchipped with their local Council.

If you have a dog or cat, you must:

  • Microchip and register at three months of age
  • Ensure your pet is wearing the Council issued registration tag
  • Renew the registration every year by April 10
  • Tell Council if you change address
  • You may be fined if your cat or dog is over three months old and is not registered, and
  • You must follow particular restrictions in relation to dangerous and restricted breeds of dogs

The microchip number is unique to your animal for its lifetime. The registration number is unique to the Southern Grampians Shire Council registration register. Having a microchip number does not mean that your animal is registered with the Council.

It is also recommended that your dog or cat have a separate ID tag with its name, phone number and address, so neighbours can return your pet if it escapes.

Assistance Dogs

Some Assistance Dogs may be exempt from registration fees. Please contact us to discuss eligibility requirements.

Restricted Dog Breeds

The State Government has made significant amendments to the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 in relation to the keeping of Restricted Breed Dogs.

This means a dog of a breed whose importation into Australia is prohibited under Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 of the Commonwealth including:

  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Japanese Tosa
  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Presa Canario

If you are the owner of a Restricted Breed Dog you must notify Council by making a declaration.

On receipt of the declaration Council will then formally advise you of the current requirements of the legislation in the keeping the dog.

Failure to comply with the legislation requirements may result in a substantial fine. Please contact us for a declaration form.
