Restricted Dog Breeds

The State Government has made significant amendments to the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 in relation to the keeping of “Restricted Breed Dogs”.

A “Restricted Breed Dog” means a dog of a breed whose importation into Australia is prohibited under Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 of the Commonwealth. These breeds are:

  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Japanese Tosa
  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Presa Canario

If you are the owner of a “Restricted Breed Dog” you must notify Council by making a declaration. On receipt of the declaration Council will then formally advise you of the current requirements of the legislation in the keeping of “Restricted Breed Dogs.” Failure to comply with the legislation requirements may result in a substantial fine.

Declaration forms can be obtained from the Council's Business Centre in Brown Street Hamilton.
