New Year’s Eve fireworks back with a bang

16 December 2021

New Year’s Eve fireworks are returning with a bang this year in Hamilton after last year’s display was cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Bruach Colliton said Council is delighted to once again welcome in the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display at Hamilton’s Melville Oval.

“The display is set to begin from 10:00pm on New Year’s Eve, Friday 31 December 2021 so let’s celebrate 2022 by welcoming fireworks back to the region,” said Cr Colliton.

“It’s been fantastic to see entertainment returning to the region including live music from street buskers in our towns to the innovative Christmas festivities including Santa’s Sleigh at the PAC. Having fireworks return to the region after last year’s hiatus is really the icing on the cake.

“The display will also be bigger and better than before with larger fireworks being used this year making the incredible lights visible from further away.

“I encourage all those who are staying in the region over the Christmas break to take the opportunity to enjoy the fireworks,” concluded Cr Colliton.

Melville Oval will be closed to public from 12:00pm 31 December 2021 until 12:00pm 1 January 2022 to ensure safe viewing distances. Traffic management will also be in place around the Melville Oval precinct with Market Place and Brown Street sides closed to traffic. Lonsdale and Thompson Streets will remain open to traffic with spectators and motorists reminded to be aware of traffic and abide by normal road rules during this time.

Best viewing areas will be around Melville Oval particularly from Brown Street. Access to the Market Place side of Melville Oval will be strictly prohibited to allow access for emergency services. A site map is attached.

Pet owners are reminded to secure animals and undertake any necessary precautions to keep pets safe during the evening.

Attendees are encouraged to share their event experiences on social media by tagging @visitgreaterhamilton and using #visitgreaterhamilton throughout the holiday period.
