Council would like to advise members of the public to avoid physical contact with the water in Lake Hamilton, with Blue Green Algae scum being detected this morning.
The algae scum was observed at the spillway in addition to visible algae at the boat ramp and eastern sides of the Lake.
Council Environmental Health Coordinator Pauline Porter said in the interests of health and safety, people should avoid using the Lake until further notice.
“Members of the public should avoid all physical contact with Lake Hamilton’s water, including swimming, sail boarding, water skiing, fishing, rowing and testing water equipment” Ms Porter said.
Landholders and animal owners are also reminded to ensure that their stock and pets are prevented from drinking the water in the lake.
Signs have been erected in key locations around Lake Hamilton notifying the public of the health and safety risks. Recreational land such as picnic areas and playgrounds remain open. This is the first occasion where-by the warning signage has required erection since March 2015.
Council will continue to monitor Lake Hamilton’s water for blue green algae until the algae levels have reached a safe level.
