The Greater Hamilton community has embraced the chance to discuss the future of their outdoor pools, with the communities of Glenthompson and Dunkeld putting forward some great ideas at the opening two sessions.
Mayor Cr Mary-Ann Brown, along with Councillors and key Council Staff, attended both sessions earlier this week and is encouraged by the strong participation of both communities.
“There were some really constructive ideas put forward and it’s so pleasing to see the communities showing their support for the continued operation of their outdoor pools.
“One of the main issues put forward by the Dunkeld community was the reliability of the pools being open during advertised hours, with a proposed change in opening hours to 2pm to 7pm. The community have also indicated they are prepared to assist with some of the many tasks involved in keeping our pools open, such as regular water testing, so this is something we can explore going forward” Cr Brown said.
“Similarly, the Glenthompson community also indicated they were eager to work with Council to help deliver the pool service. A number of people suggested they were keen to be involved in a voluntary capacity supporting the work of Council staff on pool activities including lifeguarding so this is very promising”.
Other positive suggestions from Monday’s Dunkeld session included adults exercise programs, prioritising funding to fix plant issues over other facilities, improved signage and communication with the public and better promotion of the service from Council.
“It is important that now we have started this community engagement around the outdoor pools, that we continue to build the relationship between Council and the Community. We’ve already received some great feedback from Dunkeld following the session from people who were thankful for the opportunity to discuss the issues directly with Council and we are committed to fostering these positive relationships going forward.” Cr Brown said.
“I urge anyone who has something to say about the pool service to come along to one of the four remaining sessions. This is your chance to have an impact on the way the service is delivered. We want to hear from you about opening times, infrastructure concerns and potential improvements for your community pool. So please join us and share your ideas”.

• Penshurst: Thursday 1 June, 7pm at the Volcanoes Discovery Centre
• Hamilton: Monday 5 June, 7pm at the Hamilton Cinema, Brown Street
