Supporting and Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Diversity

13 May 2022

Southern Grampians Shire Council will celebrate IDAHOBIT Day and support the LGBTQIA+ community with activities on Tuesday 17 May 2022.

IDAHOBIT Day is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) that celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally to raise awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.

It’s an important day to grow visibility, educate on inclusion, and activate change to support our LGBTQIA+ communities. 17 May also marks the anniversary of the World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems in 1990.

Council recognises that discrimination can have serious negative consequences on the social and emotional wellbeing of our residents so we are committed to strengthening community connectedness by celebrating diversity and promoting respect for all within our region.

To support our LGBTQIA+ community, Council is inviting residents to share stories under the rainbow flag which will be flying high in front of the Greater Hamilton Library. By flying the rainbow flag, Council aims to acknowledge and celebrate LGBTQIA+ people within our community, publically stand up against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

This year Council will host a celebration between 3:30pm – 5:30pm where community members can make connections, share stories, food and make pronoun badges.

Council along with Brophy Family and Youth Services, and Wellways will also launch the Southern Grampians LGBTQIA+ Social Youth Group – YUMCHA Hamilton.

YUMCHA Hamilton seeks to connect young people aged 12 – 25 who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, creating a space where youth can engage socially in a welcoming and safe environment.

No RSVPs are required for the day, residents are encouraged to come along to a welcome and open space to learn more.
